2020 Rodeo Royalty

KACHIRA PHILLIPS

Picture
My name is Kachira Phillips. I am currently a twenty-year-old medication technician while taking online classes to obtain my medical assistant degree. During the off season of rodeo, I have chosen to focus my time and passion in participating in an egg donation program to assist struggling families in the area of infertility.

My experience with horses dates back to my early childhood. I do not remember a time when I have not been infatuated with horses. I learned to ride from my great grandparents on their ranch. I rode my great grandmothers horse named Poquito. My current mount that I will be using for EOLS Court is MBM Hershey Kisses. She is a 16-year-old AQHA mare with a can-do attitude.

During High School, I was involved in FFA, basketball, volleyball rodeo and theatre. I graduated high school in 2017 with my Honor’s Diploma, minors in Spanish and enough college credit to enter university as a sophomore.

My parents are Brad and Heather Phillips and my beautiful little sister is Ryleigh. We were raised in the great outdoors, being taught primitive survivalist skills, fishing, trapping and hunting.

As an ambassador of EOLS, I strive to be a professional, approachable and integral representative. Hard, honest work and driven dedication are only a few attributes I plan to contribute during my time. It is with great dignity that I am proud to say, I can not wait to represent “the oldest show in the northwest,” Eastern Oregon Livestock Show!

MAKENZIE POLFER

Picture
Hello, Eastern Oregon Livestock Show Rodeo fans! My name is Makenzie Polfer. I was born and raised in La Grande, Oregon. I am 16 years old and a Junior at La Grande High School. My parents are Jed and Keri Polfer, and I am the oldest of three children. I have two younger sisters who are twins: Karlee and Kaitlin Polfer. My grandparents are Lawrence (Spark) and Barbara Smutz of Union County, and Leroy and Kathleen Thompson of Baker County. My father held me in his arms on the back of his favorite horse when I was just two weeks old. My love for horses will forever and always be a part of me. I will be using two of my horses this year. My seven-year-old sorrel quarter horse mare named “Reba”, and my twenty-year-old paint horse gelding named “Kansas”. Reba and Kansas are the perfect combination of athleticism, dependability, and SPEED!

My biggest mentors since I was a little girl has been Cindy Jo DeLong and her husband, Scott. My horses and I have been a part of many horse camps, clubs, playdays at the Mavericks in La Grande, and trail rides. I enjoy attending clinics with professionals to expand my horsemanship knowledge and bettering my equine science knowledge. I have been showing cattle since I was eight years old. I raise my own champion Black Angus heifers and cow/calf pairs alongside my many other show cattle enterprises. I have been showing my cattle at both the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show and the Union County Fair for many years in both 4-H and FFA. All of my cattle are grown and raised on The JKP Cattle Ranch that is owned by my Father and Mother.

I have taken many leadership roles within school-related activities, as well as outside of school. I am very involved in FFA and 4-H. I am on the La Grande High School Mock Trial Team, and the La Grande High School Political Club, Constitution and Bylaws. I am currently the 2019-2020 Advanced Historian for the La Grande FFA Chapter. I am also the 2019-2020 Secretary for the Livestock Unlimited 4-H Club. I received my Oregon FFA State Degree in March of 2020. With my work hours and money investments as a Beef Breeding Production Entrepreneur and my Work Placement by The JKP Cattle Ranch, I will be a candidate to receive my FFA American Degree at the national level upon graduation. After high school, I intend to further my education to pursue a legal career to practice law as an attorney in either natural resources, livestock, or specifically equine. I will absolutely continue cattle ranching to keep my family’s history and legacies going strong for many generations to come!

To be on the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show Royalty Court has forever been a dream of mine. Each year, I would watch the court fly by on the track and it was a special feeling that inspired me to someday be in that saddle. I plan to encourage others to be a part of this amazing Show and Rodeo, and inspire younger generations to continue these long-lived traditions. I am more than excited to represent not only my personal favorite rodeo, The Eastern Oregon Livestock Show but the PRCA as well. It is going to be an amazing summer that will be filled with many memories and new relationships. I would sincerely like to say thank you to my family and friends for all of their support.. To all of you rodeo fans, let's make the 2020 Eastern Oregon Livestock Show one to remember! “RAIN OR SHINE EOLS IS ALWAYS A GOOD TIME!”

Yours sincerely,
Makenzie L. Polfer
